The pocket dress origin story

Why Women's Clothes Don't Have Pockets

Why women's clothes don't have pockets is a question we never expected to build a whole brand around.
We were sitting in our office when a colleague walked in beaming about the pockets she'd just gotten stitched into her dress by a tailor. We asked how much it cost her. Two hundred rupees, she said, for one pocket. We sat there stunned. Not because two hundred rupees is a lot of money, but because a woman had to pay extra, after already buying the dress, just to carry her own phone.
That one moment is where Pocket Dress began.

A woman at a home sewing machine in Delhi, hand-stitching a pocket into her own saree blouse, with the quote "My mother used to hand-stitch pocket into her own clothes at home.

A friend mentioned that his mother used to stitch pockets into her clothes at home, by hand, because there was simply no other option. Once we started looking, we saw the pattern everywhere: women want pockets badly enough to alter their own clothes for them, and the fashion industry still doesn't give them any as standard.

We were already living it

This wasn't news to us, not really. Our co-founder had been getting pockets stitched into her dresses, her suits, her palazzos, for years. Not as a style choice. Because the clothes kept leaving her without one, and she kept having to fix it herself, one tailor visit at a time.

We'd been solving this problem quietly, individually, for ourselves, without ever calling it a problem worth building a solution around.

We Asked 100+ Women,

96%

Said the Same Thing.

Before we built anything, we ran a survey. Over 100 women responded, sharing how often they'd bought a dress hoping the pockets would actually work, and how often they'd been let down. Around 96 percent of the women who told us they specifically look for pocket dresses, or have bought a dress because it had pockets, said they wished more of their everyday clothing came with real ones. That number told us this wasn't a nice-to-have. It was a genuine gap worth building a brand around, not a small styling complaint.

This isn't just an Indian problem, and it isn't new

CNN reported in April 2025 that women's clothing has carried far fewer functional pockets than men's for a long time, rooted partly in old ideas that men's clothes should be useful and women's clothes should simply look good. A widely cited 2018 study by The Pudding found that pockets on women's jeans run roughly 48 percent shorter and 6.5 percent narrower than men's, on average. What we saw in India was the same idea wearing a local face: pockets that exist on paper or in product photos, but not in real use. Shallow, stitched shut, or just too small for a phone. Decoration, not function.

Real Pockets.
Real Freedom.

This Is Why Pocket Dress Exists

We started Pocket Dress to build the dress that colleague shouldn't have had to pay a tailor two hundred rupees to get. Every piece we make is designed pocket-first, deep enough for a phone, keys, or a card, so you never have to choose between looking put-together and carrying your own things. This is the reason women's clothes don't have pockets in most of the market, and the exact reason we exist to change that, one dress at a time.

FAQ's

Because You Deserve to Know Before You Buy

Who started Pocket Dress?

Pocket Dress was started by a small team who noticed how often women were paying tailors out of pocket, literally, just to get functional pockets stitched into clothes that should have had them already.

Why does Pocket Dress focus only on pockets?

Because it is a real, specific, common problem. In our own survey of 100+ women, the vast majority said they actively wished for more clothing with genuine, functional pockets.

What makes a Pocket Dress pocket different from a fake pocket?

Every Pocket Dress pocket is designed into the pattern from the start, deep enough to hold a phone or keys, not a shallow, decorative slit that's stitched shut or too small to use.
